These Yoga Books and Anatomy Books will help you make a difference to your students

I've read alot of books on yoga and alot of books on anatomy. People often ask me what other resources they can use to help improve themselves as teachers; and which yoga books or anatomy books should they look to first for insight and for building their foundation.

This list is the answer to that question. This is a list of my favourite anatomy books and yoga books. The anatomy books provide a simple yet accurate way of understanding the body and its movements. The yoga books provide a clarity in cueing that exemplifies the 8 principles of movement that I detail in Anatomy and Asana.

Most you can order directly from Amazon (with the exception of the e-books)

Anatomy and Asana by Susi Hately Aldous

This one comprehensive manual describes anatomical concepts as they relate to yoga asanas. If there is just one book you should read on yoga and anatomy, this would be the one.

Susi Hately Aldous has spent over 10 years teaching anatomical principles to students as either an anatomy teaching assistant or a yoga instructor. The principles she writes about in the book are the same she uses with very successful results in her own practice as a student and teacher.

The following three books are supplements to Anatomy and Asana: Preventing Yoga Injuries. They assume you have the knowledge that is in the first book, and want to take that knowledge deeper.

The Shoulder Girdle by Susi Hately Aldous

This ebook (which is also available as a bound version) is a supplement to the Anatomy and Asana: Preventing Yoga Injuries Spiral Bound book (listed above). In it are more drawings, more principles and more inquiries to fuel your exploration of anatomy and yoga.

In it you will learn how to create stability of the shoulder girdle so that your hand balances are stronger all the while you have less wrist and elbow pain. The book also delves into problems related to the rotator cuff and winged scapulae and provides a program to help improve your stability and mobility so you experience less pain and more freedom and ease.

The Knees by Susi Hately Aldous

The second supplement in the Anatomy and Asana series, this book is for you or your students who have knee pain.

You will learn the biomechanical connection between your hip, knee, breath and core stability. More pictures and a practice to help you get out of knee pain on and off the mat.

The Sacroiliac Joints by Susi Hately Aldous

This ebook is a supplement to the Anatomy and Asana: Preventing Yoga Injuries Spiral Bound book (listed above). In it are more drawings, more principles and more inquiries to fuel your exploration of anatomy and yoga.

In it you will learn what and where the sacroiliac joint are, why they get injured, how the breath relates to sacroiliac joint health, how stability, mobility and strength impact the sacroiliac joints, how core stability impacts sacroiliac joint health, how emotional health impacts the sacroiliac joints, how to practice to keep your sacroiliac joints healthy, and as always, inquiries and explorations to make it all make sense.

Therapeutic Yoga For The Shoulders and Hips:
Book and Online Instructional Video
by
Susi Hately Aldous

Pre-Order Today

In all my years of teaching therapeutic Yoga, the two most common physical limitations I have seen are in the shoulders and hips. Even for people with back, neck or knee pain - if they are able to improve the functioning of their shoulders and hips, their back or neck pain becomes much more manageable or even resolved.

I've designed and laid out the yoga exercises from simple to complex. As you develop awareness in the simple exercises, you'll gain ease of motion, stability and strength, which you can then take into more complex exercises to further enhance your awareness, ease, balance and freedom.

Therapeutic Yoga for the Shoulders and Hips also comes with Instructional Online Video. Due out in October 2007. To pre-purchase, click here.

Yoga For The Core:
Finding Stability in an Unstable Environment
by Suzette O'Byrne

  • Cultivate Your Core
  • Improve Back Stability
  • Improve Spinal Stability
  • Find Ease in Your Asanas

The core itself is the root of our being, the center of our balance, and in a healthy body is also the root of our movements.  Many of us know how to train the “outer core” but are disconnected to our “inner core”.

By learning how to reconnect to your inner core, you can prevent/recover from injuries, improve your posture, enhance athletic performance and create more efficient movement patterns.
